Professor Peter Gough outlines the Tutorial Program highlights
The Monday tutorial programme at OCEANS '10 is an exciting blend of the experimental and the theoretical. Topics range from radar to sonar, from navigation to signal processing, from propagation to AUVs. In fact there is something for everyone. Let me highlight just three tutorials in this edition of the Ezine.
Professor William (Bill) Carey is presenting a morning tutorial on shallow water acoustics. As we move more into a brown rather than blue water environment, knowledge of how sound propagates through a layer of shallow water over a lossy sediment seafloor is critical. Bill has his own style and his presentations are always amusing and informative. No one who has attended Bill's previous tutorials has gone away disappointed. An interesting pair of tutorials is the overview of high resolution sonar delivered by Dr Marc Pinto from NURC followed by a tutorial on synthetic aperture sonar delivered by Dr Roy-Edgar Hansen from FFI in Norway. I would certainly encourage participating in both tutorials as this gives a full overview of active sonar systems from the simplest model through to the most sophisticated system currently deployed. Both presenters are highly skilled and have some superb images to illustrate their topics. |

The response to the Call for Papers resulted in 467 abstract submissions, including 64 submissions to the Student Poster Competition. The spatial distribution was roughly 40% Asia, 20% Europe, 20% North America, and 20% Australia/New Zealand. Concentrations occurred in the technical areas of autonomous underwater vehicles, ocean observing systems, acoustic oceanography, non-acoustic sensing systems (radar, vision, hyperspectral, electromagnetic), underwater acoustic communications, and sonar signal processing, and imaging, which includes synthetic aperture sonar and simultaneous localization and mapping. These concentrations also mirror the level of interest shown by delegates in the following tutorials: AUV Technology (presented by William Kirkwood), Underwater Communications (Dr Milica Stojanovic and Lee Freitag), Overview of High Resolution Sonar (Dr Marc Pinto), Synthetic Aperture Sonar (Dr Roy Hansen), Simultaneous Localization and Imaging Methods (Dr Stefan Williams), and High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (Dr Stuart Anderson). An impressive number of submissions for the special topics were received from around the globe. This augurs well for the technical program being populated with papers and presentations that exemplify the conference theme of Showcasing advances in marine science and engineering. The Local Organising Committee and Conference Secretariat are delighted that Professor Mary O'Kane, New South Wales Chief Scientist and Scientific Engineer, has accepted the invitation to provide the welcoming address at OCEANS '10 IEEE Sydney Conference and Exhibition. |

Overview
The enthusiastic response of the scientific community to put forward quality abstracts on a variety of topics means that our expectations for a strong delegate body and cutting edge science at the OCEANS '10 IEEE Sydney Conference have been provided further grounding. We are assured that the conference will be strongly supported, and it will be an ideal opportunity for exhibitors to engage with customers from Australia and around the world. Patrons A successful Conference relies on the valued support of industry partners. An exciting range of opportunities to enable Organisations to become "Patrons" or supporters of the Conference have been developed, and our Patron and Exhibition team will ensure a value for money package that caters directly to your Organisation's marketing goals and desired level of exposure. A number of options including our Name Badges and Lanyards, and Delegate Satchels are yet to be branded and are a great way for the entire delegate body to remember and connect with your branding.
Exhibitors The Exhibition will be a major component of the Conference and the Exhibition will feature cutting edge technology across the spectrum of Oceanic Sciences, Oceanography and Marine Engineering as supported by leaders in this industry. We have sold over 50% of the exhibition space but still have a number of key positions available for prospective exhibitors. Contact us to confirm your position today. We would like to thank our current confirmed exhibitors:
