Technical Program Updates

Commodore Bruce Kafer, AM, CSC, RAN
Commodore Bruce Kafer, RAN has accepted the invitation to be a plenary speaker at OCEANS '10 IEEE Sydney.

Commodore Bruce Kafer joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Cadet Midshipman in 1977. In 1982 he specialised in hydrographic surveying and, on completion of his basic survey course, served in hydrographic survey ships of the RAN and Royal Navy.

The highlights of Commodore Kafer's seagoing career have been command of the RAN ships HMAS FLINDERS and HMAS LEEUWIN.  He has also had a variety of senior staff appointments ashore, most recently as the Chief, Combat Support Group in Fleet Headquarters.  He also served for four years as Hydrographer and Commander of the RAN's Hydrographic, Meteorological and Oceanographic Force Element Group.

For seven months in 2008-09 Commodore Kafer held command of Combined Task Force 158, then Combined Task Force 152, coalition maritime task forces responsible for security in the Persian Gulf.  In late 2009 he assumed duties as the Commandant, Australian Defence Force Academy.

Special Topic on Advances in Underwater Imaging and Mapping

Dr Marc Pinto

The OCEANS '10 IEEE Sydney Conference and Exhibition theme is 'Showcasing advances in marine science and engineering'. Consistent with this theme is the Special Topic on 'Advances in Underwater Imaging and Mapping', which is led by Dr Marc Pinto of the NATO research laboratory NURC located in La Spezia, Italy.

Marc is an international expert in active synthetic aperture sonar, which is a powerful acoustic imaging technique that coherently combines echoes from multiple pings along the sonar trajectory of a survey vehicle that effectively synthesizes a long virtual sonar aperture for the formation of range-independent high resolution sonar images. The image formation requires aligning the echoes to within one millimetre, which is possible through recent advances in sonar transducer technology, precise navigation sensors, spatial f iltering and autofocusing algorithms, and stable underwater vehicles. The practical realization of synthetic aperture sonar is a most significant advance in ocean systems engineering in recent times. Synthetic aperture sonar images provide enhanced shadow contrast of objects and multiple aspect views of the same object which, in turn, enhances classification performance. Modern wideband synthetic aperture sonar systems can provide centimetric resolution with an area coverage rate of over a square kilometre per hour.

At OCEANS '10 Sydney on Monday 24th May 2010, Marc will be presenting a half-day tutorial in the morning on the principles and practice of high resolution sonar imaging using real and synthetic apertures. This will be followed in the afternoon by a half-day tutorial presented by another recognized international expert and practitioner in the field, Dr Roy Hansen, from the Norwegian Defence Establishment (FFI). Roy is the principal scientist responsib le for the research and development of synthetic aperture sonar at FFI. He is also Project Manager for the development of the HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle, so Roy's tutorial on synthetic aperture will feature images from the state-of-the-art system fitted to HUGIN.

At OCEANS '10 Sydney, there have been over 30 abstracts submitted so far for inclusion in the main technical program on the special topic of 'Advances in Underwater Imaging and Mapping'. These papers, which are a mix of acoustic and electromagnetic systems, are to be presented in the regular sessions of the technical program, which begin on Tuesday afternoon (25th May), after the opening of the conference, the plenary and the opening of the exhibition in the morning. The technical sessions go through to late Thursday afternoon.

Close of abstracts update

At the close of abstracts, the Technical Program Chairs recorded over 400 abstract submissions submitted by marine scientists and ocean engineers from around the world for consideration and review by the OCEANS '10 Technical Program Committee. Following the review of abstracts, authors will be advised on acceptance into the program by 21 February.

Patrons and Exhibitors

Patrons

A successful Conference relies on the valued support of industry partners. An exciting range of opportunities to enable Organisations to become 'Patrons' or supporters of the Conference have been developed, and our Patron and Exhibition team will ensure a value for money package that caters directly to your Organisation's marketing goals and desired level of exposure.

Exhibition

The Exhibition will be a major component of the Conference and the Exhibition will feature cutting edge technology across the spectrum of Oceanic Sciences, Oceanography and Marine Engineering as supported by leaders in this industry. The Conference Technical Program has been designed to maximise exhibitor contact with attendees, and we will be integrating refreshment breaks, lunches, lounge areas, and internet access in a location central to the plenary and technical sessions, ensuring its role as a networking hub of the Conference.
